Devotees of the Thai martial art of Muay Thai will pay homage to one of their sport’s heroes at stadiums and training camps around the country on 17 March, national Muay Thai Day. Nai Khanom Tom is a legendary figure in the sport – he’s said to have been instrumental in securing the release of himself and fellow Siamese prisoners from Burmese captivity after an invasion of his hometown Ayutthaya in 1760, by impressing the King of Burma with his skills in defeating nine Burmese boxing champions one after the other. His statue in Ayutthaya is garlanded with flowers on Muay Thai Day.
