August-November will see bird watchers flocking to Chumphon province, on the narrow land bridge that connects Thailand’s mainland to the Malay Peninsula, to catch the arrival of hundreds of thousands of birds of prey migrating south to warmer climes. The province is on the annual migration route of these birds fleeing their sparse winter hunting grounds in cold northern countries for Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and even Australia. A Raptor Watching Festival on Khao Dinsor hill in Chumphon, a premier bird watching spot, has been established for enthusiasts to watch and record the many varieties of hawks, eagles, falcons and vultures that pass through the skies.
