Celebrated on the 12th full moon of the year, Loi Krathong 2018 falls on 23 November. One of Thailand's largest and most iconic festivals, celebrants across the country light candles and lanterns at temples and release krathongs (decorative flower floats) downriver to symbolise letting go of the past year's anger, pain and grievances. The small floats for which this festival is named after are elaborately made with flowers, intricately-folded banana leaves and candles. When released en masse, they create a flickering garland of light down the nation's waterways. This festival is perhaps most spectacular in the northern city of Chiang Mai where it lasts for a full three days, coinciding with Yi Peng, a traditional Lanna holiday celebrated by the mass release of floating lanterns.
