As temperatures soar and the Thai lunar calendar hits reset, revellers across the country will welcome the Thai New Year with the Songkran Festival from 13-15 April. While Thais will head home for family gatherings and merit-making, visitors are no doubt looking forward to the over-the-top water fights this holiday has come to be known for. Chiang Mai is notorious for taking this festival to extremes with a 3-day citywide water fight, but Khao San Road in Bangkok also gives it a pretty good go. Traditionally, splashing with water was a blessing to wash away the year's worries and woes, but nowadays, massive water guns and Hawaiian-print shirts are de rigueur.
