Discovery Yachts’ game-changing Discovery 55 set new standards for luxury world-cruisers when it was unveiled at the turn of the millennium, enabling couples to set sail and explore the world in safety and comfort.

Some 17 years later, with happy Discovery 55 owners now having clocked up thousands of sea miles and numerous circumnavigations, the latest generation of this sailing concept has taken to the waters, in the shape of the Discovery 58.

Like its predecessors, the Discovery 58 is a sublime ocean-going technological marvel that sails effortlessly by push-button control – yet still provides all the exhilaration of slicing through high seas under booming sail power.

Its muscular turn of speed is achieved with the slippery hull designed by renowned naval architect Ron Holland, while the ability to swap sails or tuck in a couple of reefs without leaving the cockpit means practically no physical effort is required to sail this yacht.

In fact, the refinements of in-mast furling, twin-head sail rig, selftacking jib and electric winches all enable her to be sailed easily and efficiently by just two people.

Discovery Yachts was founded in Southampton, UK, by husband and wife team John and Caroline Charnley, who decided to design and build their own yacht after unsuccessfully searching for one that satisfied their own long-term cruising needs.

Their personal know-how of just what’s needed for world cruising has resulted in a range of yachts tailored for bluewater sailing couples, with ease of sailing and expansive onboard comfort specifications top of exhaustive must-have lists.

The instant appeal of the Discovery 58 is its appearance; a sleek centre-cockpit profile topped by contemporary coach-roof design, clear uncluttered decks and towering mast that all catch the eye.

Below decks, there’s comfort, space and practicality in equal measures, articulated in quality wood finishes throughout.

The raised saloon with its streamlined windows is a welcoming sheltered haven to view majestic waves in comfort during passage, or more mundane port surroundings at anchor. For sailing in warmer climates, twin forward-facing windows can be opened for a cooling breeze, and the onboard air conditioning system is also available to lower temperatures.

There’s a fully-equipped galley complete with massive fridge and freezer, ensuite owner’s stateroom aft and guest accommodation in a forward double cabin, as well as a Pullman cabin.

With generous stowage and tank space vital for bluewater sailors, Discovery 58 carries 1,300 litres of fuel and 1,000 litres of water, enough for weeks of worry-free ocean cruising.

Stowage lockers are neatly tucked away around the yacht for more than adequate provisions and other supplies to be squirrelled away for long voyages.

And the cleverly insulated engine room means that even with engine and generator running, the only sounds to be heard onboard under passage will be the crash of the waves and the crack of wind-whipped sails.

The merits of Discovery 58 are already garnering international recognition, with nominations for Boat of the Year in the Luxury Cruising Division in Cruising World magazine

Equally adept at island-hopping or long international voyages, this long-legged ocean cruiser is the ideal yacht for secure and wonderfully enjoyable sea-going adventures.
