Thailand's beloved martial art gets a day to celebrate each year on 17 March. Though not a public holiday, this day will be observed by Muay Thai gyms and training centres across the country. In historic Ayutthaya, Muay Thai Day celebrations often stretch for a whole week and are also marked by the World Wai Khru Muay Thai Ceremony. Traditionally boxers begin matches with a dance called the Wai Khru, unique to each gym, which pays respect to Muay Thai teachers and this ancient martial art. Hundreds from across Thailand and the globe will gather to pay homage to legendary fighter Nai Khanom Tom, and share their love for and pay respect to the sport.
